People come to Google with a variety of searches. Many of those searches (billions) are shopping related. From "gifts for mom" to "comfortable orthopedic shoes for seniors" to "how do I fix a smelly basement", a lot of shopping starts on Google.
As we shifted away from the shopping tab, I was the lead designer for the product experience on the main search results page and worked with a variety of teams (front end, data, quality, ranking, user research) to iterate and improve that experience.
